Łącznie studiuje tu około 1000 studentów i studentek, a zajęcia prowadzi około 300 wykładowców i wykładowczyń. Mimo zatem stosunkowo niewielkich – w porównaniu do innych uczelni wyższych – rozmiarów ASP jest organizacją o dużym stopniu zróżnicowania wewnętrznego, obejmującą swoim działaniem rozległy obszar twórczości artystycznej, projektowej i konserwatorskiej.
Rezultaty analizy znalazły odbicie w celach operacyjnych i propozycjach działań (zob.
Akademia stwarza najlepsze warunki do uprawiania twórczości, przekazywania wiedzy i kompetencji, otaczania dziedzictwa troską oraz szerzenia kultury i sztuki w społeczeństwie.
Akademia aktywnie sprzyja swobodnemu wyrażaniu idei, myśli, poglądów i wizji artystycznych.
Dążąc do wcielenia naszej wizji w życie, postanawiamy działać z poszanowaniem poniższych zasad:
i kompetencyjne.
Synergia ma prowadzić do lepszego wykorzystania potencjału instytucji dzięki łączeniu zasobów i kompetencji wewnątrz uczelni i w powiązaniu z zewnętrznymi podmiotami.

History of the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków dates back to 1818 – it was then that the school was established as part of the structure of the Jagiellonian University, with an aim of educating artists. Over time, it became an independent university, received its proper name, and broadened the scope of didactic activity. It is the oldest university of its kind in Poland, with over two hundred years of tradition, which places it among the elite group of the oldest art schools in Europe. From the beginning of its existence, the university has benefited from European influences, and has exerted its own influence on shaping trends in art. For over two centuries of its active presence, the Academy has been creating the canon of artistic education in Poland. The graduates and lecturers of Kraków’s Academy of Fine Arts have included – and continue to include – the most outstanding Polish artists.
Currently, the structure of the Academy consists of seven faculties dealing with various aspects of art, design, and conservation. These are the faculties of: Interior Design, Industrial Design, Graphic Arts, Intermedia, Conservation and Restoration of Works of Art, Painting, and Sculpture. There is also a Doctoral School and a number of inter-faculty units at the university. In total, the student body counts approximately 1000 persons, and the faculty, approximately 300 lecturers. Therefore, despite its relatively small size – at least compared to other universities – the Academy of Fine Arts is an organization with a high degree of internal diversification, spanning a vast area of artistic, design, and conservation creativity.
Within the scope of the work on developing the university’s new strategy for the years 2021-2030, its authorities decided to lay open the elements of the strategic plan to extensive consultations within the community constituting the Academy of Fine Arts. The planned changes – both organizational and infrastructural – resulted in the need to develop an updated formula for the university’s operation. This is aspiring not only to make use of the unique heritage, but also to nurture the Academy’s artistic and educational development. The expected result of the strategic process that we conducted is to obtain the broadest possible consensus around the adopted assumptions, increase the involvement of the academic community in the long-term planning process, and employ ideas submitted by various circles within the university.
Work on this strategy was preceded by a participatory process, in which a wide range of research, teaching and administrative staff, undergraduate and postgraduate (doctoral) students of the Academy of Fine Arts identified key threats and essential needs, and formulated challenges that the new strategy aspires to address. During these meetings, the most important areas of the institution’s functioning (areas for development) were also discussed, within which strategic objectives (general and long-term goals) as well as operational objectives (more detailed goals, with a shorter time horizon) were considered. In addition, in the course of further work on the strategy, we analysed long-term external trends that may affect the development and functioning of universities in the coming decade as well as key stakeholders – people and organizations that should be taken into account when formulating the assumptions for the new strategy. Based on these contexts, strategic objectives and operational objectives have been set for each dimension of the university’s development (see: Appendix 1).
The SWOT analysis presented below is a synthetic result of consultations with the Academy’s community.
The most important conclusions from identifying the strengths and weaknesses of the organization:
The most important conclusions resulting from the identification of opportunities and threats for the organization:
Conclusions were drawn from an in-depth trend analysis, which are reflected at the level of strategic objectives, and the structure of operational activities under the present strategy:
The general conclusion from the stakeholder analysis is the existence of a wide field of potential collaborations that can significantly reinforce the development of the Academy in many respects. In order to make use of this development factor, it is necessary to act in two ways – firstly, to intensify the already existing relations, and secondly, to take steps in order to establish contacts and initiate joint activities with new partners. At the same time, multi-directionality should be the key principle underlying the higher degree of opening up the university to its environment. This means both that the ASP can have a greater impact on the outside world, and that it can draw inspiration and resources, and function better, by interacting with outside partners and entities. The diversity of potential partners is also important – as part of the analysis, eighteen different categories of stakeholders were selected, including, inter alia, cultural institutions, non-governmental organizations, business entities, local governments, and the academic sector (see: Appendix 2). The results of the analysis were reflected at the level of operational objectives and proposed actions (see: Appendix 1).
The strategy is structured hierarchically (from general to specific) and consists of the following elements:
The mission of the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków is to practice creativity in the fields of art, design, and conservation as well as transferring knowledge and creative competences, spreading culture, and taking care of heritage. The most important objective is to create conditions for the development of the entire academic community and the well-being of the society at large.
The declaration of the mission of the Academy of Fine Arts is complemented by the following statements, which reflect the context of its formulation.
The Academy comprises the community of artists and their collaborators, regardless of their worldview or social affiliation.
All members of the academic community are equal, although they remain in their respective professional and academic relationships.
Various, even mutually exclusive ideas and ways of expressing them have the right to be proclaimed and to coincide within the Academy’s community. None of these can be considered inappropriate for non-artistic reasons. We see this diversity as richness – in cultural and civilizational sense. Our concern is to establish conditions for their creative coexistence and interaction.
The highest concern of this community is art, because we believe that art brings the power of freedom to express oneself and describe the world; truth, beauty, and goodness.
The Academy offers the best possible conditions for practicing creativity, transferring knowledge and competences, caring for heritage, and promoting culture and art in society.
The Academy actively promotes the free expression of ideas, thoughts, views and artistic visions.
The Academy is free from objectifying, humiliating, stigmatizing or excluding any person.
The Academy is sensitive to the needs of society and the challenges of the present day.
The Academy is open to change.
Striving to turn our vision into reality, we decide to act in accordance with the following principles:
The areas for development are those key areas of operation of the Academy, embraced by its mission, in which the change is envisaged. In the perspective of the coming decade, we should be particularly mindful of four such areas:
This area of the strategy includes all activities related to creativity at the university. These include artistic, design and conservation works, as well as research conducted by the staff, and undergraduate and postgraduate students. Activities in this dimension determine how the Academy of Fine Arts and the members of its community will develop professionally, creatively, and scientifically, and to what extent the organization will use and shape new trends in artistic and scientific activity. The key challenge facing the university in this area is:
How to make the Academy of Fine Arts a creative work environment and support its entire community in their professional, artistic and scientific development?
This area includes the activities of the university as a teaching centre, which offers the conditions, methods and staff for educating undergraduate and postgraduate students.
Activities undertaken in this dimension are targeted towards achieving the highest quality of education possible at the university. For this reason, they should be characterized by flexibility in adjusting to the needs of undergraduate and postgraduate students and staff, as well as the labour market and the art market, combined with organizational efficiency. The challenge facing the university in this area is:
How to make the education process and organization of work at the university flexible – that is, adaptable to various needs and new phenomena – while maintaining organizational efficiency?
This area includes activities aimed at the relations of the university with the outside world – on a local and global scale. Activities in this dimension will strengthen the position of the university, by creating a network of connections and support around it. They should lead to the university generating contact points with local, national, and international partners. The key challenge facing the university in this area is:
How to allow the university maintain a relationship of mutual exchange and partnership cooperation with its environment?
In this area, the strategy should provide for activities aimed at collecting, documenting, disseminating and wide use of the legacy – that is, the achievements and body of work of undergraduate and postgraduate students, graduates, as well as current and former employees. The achievements of the university are understood here as the entirety of the creative legacy of all people associated with the Kraków Academy of Fine Arts. The challenge facing the university in this area is:
How to systematically collect, document, and disseminate the legacy of the Academy of Fine Arts, so that it can support building the image of the university and its statutory activity?
Based on the strategic assumptions, goals have been formulated. Each of the strategic objectives is implemented in individual areas of strategy development through operational objectives. The operational objectives indicate actions that should be taken in the course of strategy implementation. Operational goals have been defined for each strategic goal, in each of the four selected areas of the Academy’s development. For respective operational objectives, the proposed activities, indicators and entities responsible for their implementation have been defined. In this way, twelve operational objectives were selected, four for each strategic objective. Thanks to this structure, the objectives evenly cover every area of the university’s development. The objectives are listed below, and their summary is presented concisely in the matrix of the Academy’s objectives. Additionally, the objectives are presented in more detail in Appendix 1, where their outline is supplemented with pertinent indicators and proposed actions.
The strategy of the Academy of Fine Arts focuses on activities aimed at the implementation of three main goals, which define the most important, long-term changes that we expect to introduce. These are:
The potential of the university is understood here both as its infrastructure base, as well as human resources and competences. In view of the challenges of the new strategy, the potential of the Academy of Fine Arts is to be developed adequately to the needs, while maintaining the Academy’s stability.
The synergy is meant to lead to a better use of the institution’s potential by combining resources and competences within the university, and in connection with outside entities. This means cooperation across the structure of the departments and studios within the university, and the inclusion of the Academy of Fine Arts in the exchange network and platform for academic and artistic collaboration at the inter-university level as well as within municipal, regional, and international forums.
The long-term horizon of the strategy (i.e. a decade) as well as the phenomena and accelerating changes described at the stage of strategic diagnosis point to increasing flexibility as the third strategic goal. Flexibility is understood here as the ability of university structures and procedures to adapt to the pace and characteristics of changes taking place in the environment. This means creating flexible management models, increasing the organization’s awareness of emerging opportunities and threats, and improving the response to those opportunities and threats.

The above matrix shows the overall outline of the strategy: the hierarchy of goals and the relationship between the objectives and development areas. The goal structure (see: Appendix 1), which is the elaboration of the matrix, juxtaposes the strategy’s objectives with proposed actions contributing to their implementation, and provides an initial timeframe, along with a set of indicators for the various elements of the Academy’s development plan.
Thus, a precise grid of twelve detailed objectives is presented, implementing three strategic objectives. The set of information contained in Appendix 1 is therefore a comprehensive basis for the implementation of the strategy by individual units of the university. It also serves as a management tool for the Academy of Fine Arts authorities, and as a reference point for all activities undertaken by the Academy’s community.
Below, we list the official roles at the university that are related to the four main areas of development. The Rector is responsible for the overall concept plan and implementation of the strategy, with the administrative and managerial support from the Chancellor.
